When Leg Pain Comes and Goes: Why the Pattern Matters
Leg pain can be confusing. Some days it is there, and some days it is not. Sometimes it starts when you walk. Other times it gets worse after standing for a long time.

Pain that starts when you walk and gets better when you stop may be linked to poor blood flow in the arteries. This can happen with peripheral artery disease, also called PAD.
Pain that gets worse later in the day, especially with swelling or heaviness, may be more related to vein problems. When veins do not move blood back to the heart well, blood can collect in the legs.
Other clues can help too. Does the pain happen in one leg or both? Does it improve when you raise your legs? Does the skin look different? Are your feet cold?
Not every leg pain is caused by a vascular problem. Muscles, joints, nerves, and the spine can also cause pain. But paying attention to when the pain starts and what makes it better can help your provider understand what may be going on.
