Understanding Venous Malformations

Venous malformations are clusters of abnormally formed veins that are present at birth, though they may not always be noticed right away. These veins don’t work like normal veins and can cause problems as a person grows.

Venous malformations often appear as blue or purple areas under the skin and may cause swelling, pain, or problems with movement depending on their size and location. They can sometimes lead to blood clots or skin changes if left untreated.

While venous malformations cannot be cured, treatments are available to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. Options may include compression therapy, medication to manage clots or pain, or minimally invasive procedures performed by a vascular specialist. Regular monitoring is important to catch changes early and keep complications under control.
